ESI Author’s Guidelines for Manuscript Submission

Thank you for considering publishing your manuscript with the Emerging Scholars Initiative (ESI) Press. ESI Press sets out to provide a platform for emerging researchers and interdisciplinary scholars to publish their work. We are committed to the highest academic standards and publish a range of formats including journals, books and monographs. We invite interested authors to submit an original, previously unpublished manuscript from fields that include the social sciences, broader humanities and disciplines that intersect with the humanities.

All submissions undergo a rigorous double-blind peer review process before the publication process begins. Publication usually takes approximately 12 to 16 weeks to finalise and as an initial step, we request interested authors submit a book proposal that details the exact scope of the project. Guidelines on submitting the book proposal are available here.

The book proposal must include the following:

  • The provisional book title
  • A current curriculum vitae of the author/s and/or volume editor/s, including address, telephone number, email and current position
  • Synopsis of the book:
    • 100-350 word description of the book
    • The estimated length of the book
    • Number of illustrations, graphs or tables that are to appear in the book
    • Table of contents with brief descriptions of each chapter
  • Introductory chapter and a sample chapter
  • Details of any deadlines that will need to be factored into the publication process
  • An indication of whether any of the chapters/sections of the book have already been published, and whether you are willing to revise the chapter or source permission from the original publisher.

Once the proposal has been accepted, you will need to submit the full manuscript for ethics approval through your institution’s ethics board.

Once you have received your ethics approval, please submit your final manuscript to the press through the submissions portal. Please ensure that the manuscript follows our style guide available here. Additional information regarding the preparation of your manuscript is available here.

The manuscript is sent for peer-review and these comments will be shared with the authors/editors. Once we have received the redrafted text that addresses these queries, the manuscript will be sent for copyediting and proofreading before the layout process begins. The final proofs will be shared with the authors/editors for final confirmation before the manuscript is published in an open-access monograph/eBook/hardcopy format or whichever combination the author requires.

All book submissions should be made via the ESI Press Submissions page. Should you have any questions or queries, please contact Andrea du Toit and she will refer you to one of our managing editors to guide you through the process.
